Challenge
Located directly on the beach in Islamorada, this luxury residence features a deck-level perimeter overflow pool and spa finished in Sukabumi stone, along with a lower water feature.
At first glance, the pool appears remarkably simple. In reality, a full perimeter overflow system is one of the most technically demanding types of pools to engineer. The overflow system required a collector tank to be concealed beneath the adjacent wood deck while maintaining the clean architectural appearance of the project. The Sukabumi stone finish also required specialized specifications for the waterproofing, setting materials, and grout to ensure the stone could be installed properly and perform reliably in a submerged environment.
Solution
The perimeter overflow system was engineered to maintain a uniform water level around the entire pool and spa while keeping the collector tank concealed beneath the adjacent wood deck. Integrating the collector tank into the deck allowed the overflow system to remain completely hidden without interrupting the surrounding architecture.
Special attention was also given to the Sukabumi stone finish. The engineering included project-specific waterproofing, setting materials, grout, and installation requirements to accommodate the unique characteristics of the stone and help ensure long-term performance in a submerged environment.
The result is a pool that appears remarkably simple, while relying on a carefully engineered overflow system and specialized construction details hidden beneath the finished surface.
