Challenge
Perched atop the cliffs of Fish Bay in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the property offered dramatic panoramic views but the existing backyard no longer reflected the character of the home or took advantage of its setting. The client commissioned a complete redesign, engineering, and construction administration of the outdoor environment to create a space that was both more functional and more reflective of the island.
The challenge was to transform the property while making it feel as though it had always belonged there. The new pool, spa, landscape, decking, circulation paths, and viewing areas all needed to respond to the natural terrain, preserve the dramatic cliffside views, and create a more functional outdoor living environment.
Solution
The backyard was completely reimagined around a radius vanishing-edge pool positioned along the cliff edge, creating the impression that the water extends directly into the surrounding landscape. A raised vanishing-edge spa was integrated into the existing rock formation, allowing water to cascade naturally over the stone before entering the pool below.
Native stone and indigenous planting were incorporated throughout the property so the new landscape felt consistent with the surrounding island rather than introduced to it. Multiple new stairways were added to improve circulation between the main residence, guest house, and lower levels of the property, while a new viewing terrace created a dedicated destination overlooking Fish Bay.
The result is a backyard that feels naturally connected to its surroundings, combining architecture, water, and landscape into a cohesive outdoor environment while dramatically improving the way the property is experienced and used.
