Challenge
Designed for a high-profile celebrity residence, this waterfront estate was created by a renowned architect and landscape architect, with the vanishing-edge pool and koi pond serving as defining architectural elements of the property. The koi pond also incorporated a custom art pedestal that needed to appear as a natural extension of the water feature.
The challenge was developing the design into a comprehensive engineering and construction document package without compromising the original vision. Particular attention was required to coordinate the vanishing-edge details, custom art pedestal, surrounding architecture, and landscape so the project could be constructed exactly as intended.
Solution
The project was engineered to preserve the clean, understated appearance envisioned by the architect and landscape architect, with particular attention given to the vanishing-edge details, natural rock edges, and the close relationship between the aquatic features and adjacent structures.
A custom pedestal for the commissioned artwork was developed in direct coordination with the artwork manufacturer so the sculpture would appear to float above the koi pond while remaining fully supported. The pedestal height and water level were coordinated to conceal the support system and achieve the intended visual effect.
The adjacent cabanas also required close structural coordination. Although they were designed to appear as though they floated above portions of the pool and koi pond, they were engineered as completely independent structures. The foundations for both systems were coordinated to avoid conflicts while maintaining the architect’s intended design.
